Choosing the Right Bar Stool Height: A Complete Guide
Counter height vs bar height vs table height. Learn the difference and measure correctly before you buy.
Getting the right stool height is the single most important factor in comfort. Here is how to measure correctly.
Three Standard Heights
- Table height: 28-30 inch surface, 18 inch seat. Standard dining chairs.
- Counter height: 36 inch surface, 24-26 inch seat. Most kitchen islands.
- Bar height: 40-42 inch surface, 28-30 inch seat. Commercial bars and raised home bars.
How to Measure
Measure from the floor to the underside of your counter or bar. Subtract 10-12 inches to get your ideal seat height. This leaves enough legroom for comfortable seating.
Adjustable Stools
If you are unsure or have a non-standard counter, adjustable height stools are the safest choice. They typically range from 24 to 30 inches and use a simple lever mechanism.
