Bar Stool Materials Guide: Metal, Wood, and Upholstery

The material your stool is made from determines its durability, comfort, and maintenance. Here is what to look for.

Metal

Steel frames with powder-coated finishes are the most durable option. They resist scratches, support high weight capacities, and work in both indoor and outdoor settings. Look for non-scratch foot caps to protect your floors.

Wood

Wood seats and backs bring warmth and natural texture. Walnut and oak are the most common choices. Look for sealed finishes that resist moisture and are easy to wipe clean.

Upholstery

Polyester and leather upholstery with foam padding provides the most comfort for extended seating. Look for 3-inch or thicker foam. Leather develops a patina over time, while polyester is more stain-resistant.

Combination Designs
